Donations and Bequests
The purpose for which the Johnson Society has been set up is to:
- Advance the education of the public in the life, works and times of Dr Samuel Johnson.
- Assist in the preservation, maintenance, repair, restoration and enhancement of the contents of Dr Johnson’s Birthplace as a place of historical interest for the benefit of the public.
We endeavour to achieve the first of these through our normal activities which include lectures, outings, sponsorship of events in schools and in Lichfield to promote interest in Johnson, the Annual Supper and the printing of our annual Transactions. These activities are funded through our General Fund.
We also assist the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum in paying for the restoration of its artefacts connected with Dr Johnson and his associates, so that they can be displayed for the benefit of the wider public. The cost of any such assistance is made through a special fund known as ‘The Friends of the Birthplace Fund’.
Obviously, the more funds which the Society has at its disposal, the more effective its ability to achieve its objects can be. We invite you to help us spread the word about Samuel Johnson by means of either a bequest or a donation.
Your bequest should be made to The Johnson Society (Lichfield), c/o The Johnson Birthplace Museum, Breadmarket Street, Lichfield, WS13 6LG, and should quote the Society’s Charity Number 1078243. If you wish your bequest to be directed towards the general activities of the Society, you should stipulate that it should be placed in the Society’s General Fund. To ensure your bequest is used for restoration please stipulate ‘The Friends of the Birthplace Fund’.
